VLC Night Race a true success

Paddles up.

Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) hosted their annual Night Race last Tuesday.

“The turnout was great, we had more people signing up just before the race,” said VLC’s Wayne Saunders.

The race was an ideal opportunity for paddlers heading for the Dusi Marathon, to refine their racing and portaging techniques.

The Dusi is scheduled to take place this week, from February 19 to 21.

The race gave paddlers the opportunity to squeeze in some last minute practice.

Long sleeved shirts and a free meal were given to the first 150 entrants.

The 15km race comprised of five laps of 3km distances, each with a short portage.

Although it was predominantly a K1 event, there were K2 and K3 paddlers who had their own race starting just five minutes after the K1s.

The Soweto Canoe Club’s three paddlers, Siseko Ntondini, Tom Ngcobo and Loveday Zondi, were in the lead from the beginning of the race, and it was no surprise when they all finished the race, dominating all three podium positions.

Ntondini was placed first, Ngcobo second and Zondi third.

All finishers received medals and category winners received gold medals.

“The club also has paddlers heading down to the Dusi, and we are excited and believe that our paddlers will produce great results; we wish them the best of luck,” said Saunders.
