Gunners and Rays to continue their battle

Exciting game cancelled due to heavy rain.

Delville Sports Club hosted the SAB Castle League fixture between Germiston Rays and African Gunners on Sunday.

The league, commenced during the last week of September, has 18 teams vying for the number one spot.

Nerves were evident in both teams from kick-off, which caused for many wasted balls that frustrated both coaches.

The nerves seemingly faded as the audience began to witness more skills and more shots on target.

The game transformed to a more adrenalin-packed fixture with more skillful tackles on the Rays by the Gunners.

The Gunners went full force on their attack leading the Rays to playing their game, a fast-paced game.

Ball possession was proof of the rattled local boys not having the ball in the hands.

Rays’ coach Stanley Ratau helped his players by shouting that they are playing their opponents’ fast game.

Soon after the coaches shouts of diverting back to their own game play, the Rays began picking up pace.

Close calls from corner kicks gave way for some time, from both teams, but none of the attempts met the back of the net.

Unfortunately for the teams, the game was cancelled as they were warmed up.

“The referee called the game off due to the heavy rain,” said Ratau.

It is unclear when the two teams will take to the field again and finish off their fixture.

“The game was stopped just before the end of the first-half and we are still yet to find out if it will be a rematch or whether we will only play the remaining minutes,” said the acting coach of the African Gunners, Nicolas Mutambo.

The local boys, Rays, prior to this fixture, played seven games, lost two, drew one and won four, while their opponents also played seven games in the league, lost six and drew one.
