Running for Life half-marathon creates HIV-awareness

Run for a cause.

The metro, in association with the Soul City Sports Club, will again host the World Aids Day Half-marathon.

The event comprises a 21.1km, a 10km and a 5km road race and will be held at the Katlehong Sports Complex, Masakhane Road, Katlehong, on December 7.

“The race is aimed at encouraging participants and communities at large to unite in the fight against HIV and Aids, by showing support for people living with the virus and those who are affected,” said metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

“The race will also commemorate the lives lost due to HIV-related sicknesses.

“The metro is one of the cities that have the highest rate of HIV infection in the country.”

Gadebe said another objective is to create awareness of the dangers of unprotected sex and having multiple partners.

Various NGOs in the field of HIV and Aids will participate in the day’s proceedings.

“They will be present at the race venue to distribute educational information and provide counselling and testing services,” explained Gadebe.

Registration will open at 5.30am on race day.

The 21.1km and 10km races will start at 7am, with the 5km fun run kicking off at 7.10am.

Entry forms are available at all central Gauteng races and at the city’s Sport and Recreation offices, at the Germiston Stadium.

Athletes may also enter online at www.entrytime.com.
