Good effort from local paddler

Local paddler finishes Fish River Marathon.

Germiston’s Craig Smith recently competed in the 2014 Hansa Fish River Marathon South African K3 Championships.

Smith and his teammates, Warren Mackenzie and Patrick Thomas, who are all members of the Florida Lake Canoe Club, had an uneventful race, with successful shooting of the majority of major rapids.

They finished the race in 50th position for the K3s in a time of six hours and 50 minutes, over the two days.

The Hansa Fish River Marathon took place in Cradock, in the Eastern Cape, amid the usual gusty winds and mountain chill.

The race ran from the Grassridge Dam, traversing a section of 80km of wild white water, achieved by a guaranteed water release, as well as long sections of flat river, and a number of boat-breaking rapids.

The Fish River Marathon also hosted the K3 SA Championships, with more than 100 K3 boats lining up at the start of the race.

Of the 100 K3s who started the race, only 90 finished.
