VLC paddler conquers Fish River training race

Impressive results for local paddler.

Victoria Lake Canoe Club’s (VLC) Richard Cele attended the Watuni High Performance Klip Race, hosted by the Watuni Canoe Club, based on the Vaal River, in Vanderbijlpark, on September 13.

The race served as a training event for the Hansa Fish River Marathon, which will be a K1 championship this year, in mid-October.

Cele easily won the 20km race, from Henley-on-Klip to Meyerton, in one hour, 26 minutes, despite the low winter water levels, finishing nearly a minute ahead of the first double canoe.

The local canoeist, who coaches and trains the youth development teams of canoeists at VLC, originated from the Dusi Valley, where he was a successful participant in the Change of Life programme for the youth of the valley and learnt to paddle on the Dusi River.

The VLC paddler is looking forward to the 80km wild water, with a guaranteed water release, on the Fish River, in Cradock.
