Fred Morrison Road Race a great success

Athletes do it for charity.

Germiston Callies Harriers were the proud hosts of the Fred Morrison 21km and 10km road race, that started and finished at the Germiston Stadium, on Sunday.

Athletes from all corners of the country came out in numbers to take part and showcase their talents.

Community members, friends and family members also came along, to support and cheer on the athletes.

As Callies were the hosts, their athletes didn’t take part in the race but served as marshals and also helped in other departments.

This year, Southern SuperSpar has come on board as the title sponsor for the race, which resulted in a number of exciting improvements on previous events.

The prize money has increased for both the 21km and 10km races, and goodie bags were handed out to the first 2 000 athletes.

All proceeds will be given to Germiston Child Welfare.

T-shirts and medals were also handed out to all the athletes who managed to reach the finish line.

The route through the streets of Germiston was fast and ideal for novice athletes.

Among the runners, power walkers were present and were just as determined to make the three-hour cut-off.

Marshals and Ekurhuleni traffic officials were present at all the main intersections and were successful in controlling traffic.

Motorists were also very patient and obeyed the instructions given by the marshals and traffic officers.

The GCN was unable to get the results of the top finishers before going to print, as they still had to be finalised and confirmed by the referee.
