City takes on the Bens

Super League fixture.

Germiston City Football Club took to the field in a top-table fixture against Old Bens at the Delville Sports Club on Saturday, August 9.

The hosts enjoyed a good start, keeping Old Bens at bay for the first twenty minutes. They combined well, spreading passes between their defence and midfield but failed to find the early breakthrough.

Old Bens gradually got themselves into the game and threatened the local team’s defence, but Dembi Mayamela and Keagan Mendes defended well in the heart of the Germiston backline.

After an entertaining first-half, the sides went into the break with 0-0 on the scoreboard.

Old Bens began the second-half on the attack and were awarded in the 52nd minute with a penalty.

Germiston were not to be discouraged; however, as they sought out an equaliser. Fine work in the midfield by Innocent Dhlamini produced a through ball down the left to Kaya Gertse, ending in Zuma Maketso being fouled in the box.

The subsequent penalty was slotted home by Pizo Maketso.

Old Bens attacked from kick-off and kept the pressure on the Germiston defence while a foul by Rockie Islam saw him get a yellow card.

The following free-kick saw a miss-timed clearance by the Germiston defence fall straight to an Old Bens player, whose shot was deflected off a Germiston defender, resulting in a goal, 2-1 to the visitors.

With time against them, Germiston maintained the pressure and with seven minutes left, Dhlamini passed the ball into the path of Zuma Maketso, who cut into the Old Bens goal area before unleashing a shot which found the back of the Old Bens’ net, 2-2.

The game seemed to head towards a draw but it would be the visitors who would have the final laugh with a last-ditch goal to run away with a 3-2 victory.
