Germiston City take on Bedford Saints

Germiston City celebrate 4 - 0 victory.

After the disappointing result against Highlands Park, in their last encounter, Germiston City Football Club were back in action in Super League 2 this past weekend, with a game against the Bedford Saints, on the Saints home ground.

City could celebrate a 4-0 victory after the match.

Saints attacked from the kick-off and found the net in the early minutes of the game.

Unfortunately for the Saints, this was ruled offside by the linesman and the goal was not awarded.

Germiston had most of the ball possession in the opening stages and a lovely, diagonal ball from Genie Sekobelo found Zuma Maketso, who laid the ball onto Kaka Rochane, who made the Saints keeper work for a save in the bottom right hand corner, in the seventh minute

Saints were kept under pressure and were relying on a strong counter attack to keep them in the game.

In the 11th minute, Saints broke through and a timely tackle by Dembi Mayemele saw them win a corner, which was easily dealt with by the Germiston defence.

Germiston continued to keep the pressure on Saints, whose tackles were becoming more and more robust.

The referee saw fit to book two Saints players in quick succession, with Germiston unable to capitalise on the free kicks.

Germiston’s central defence of Dembi Mayemele and Keagan Mendes were rarely challenged in the first half, but were still involved with some slick passes to set up the Germiston attack.

Some good play in the midfield by Pizzo Muso and Shakes Mojapelo strengthened Germiston’s superiority.

Half time came with no goals to either side.

Germiston kicked off the second half and kept up the pressure on the Saints defence – in the second minute the Saints goalkeeper set off a bad pass to his defender, who misaligned his pass into the path of Kaya Gertse, who pounced on the error.

A well timed pass into the path of Kaka Rochane earned Germiston their first goal.

Gertse continued to improve, with some excellent runs down the left hand wing, combined with a much improved second half display by Zuma Maketso.

Saints were battling to keep themselves in the game.

With the Germiston defence rarely being called upon to work, they were beaten by approaching Saints players and had to rely on the ever faithful Brandon Greyling, in the Germiston goals, to clean up.

In the eighth minute, Gertse broke down the left, leaving the Saints defender in his wake, and the Saints were no match for Rochane.

His goal brought the score to 2-0 for Germiston.

Germiston kept up the pressure, with Rochane hitting the post and Maketso shooting over the bar in the 17th minute.

Gertse knocked a through ball for Lebogang Chokoe to push past the keeper, for the third goal of the match.

Germiston then found the back of the net yet again, with Chokoe scoring his second goal and Germiston’s fourth goal of the match.

The game ended in a 4-0 victory for Germiston.

This means the team now lie in second place in the Super League 2, behind Old Bens.

The team will face Old Bens in a home match, on Saturday, August 9; kick-off will be at 3.30pm.

Germiston City’s second team were not as lucky in their match, and were beaten 1-2 by the Saints’ seconds.

Germiston’s loss was a result of missed chances, especially in the first half.

This dropped Germiston to second in the Super League 2 Reserve League.
