Glory for Primrose kickboxing gym

A power-packed performance by Mwekassa.

Primrose-based Fearless Fighting’s Zack Mwekassa spoiled the Glory promotional debut of former UFC (Unlimited Fighting Championships) heavyweight Pat Barry, at Glory 16, in Denver, USA, recently, by scoring a violent, first-round knock-out in Barry’s hometown.

Barry came out throwing kicks and pressuring Mwekassa against the ropes.

The Congolese-born kickboxer answered back, connecting with punches and slowing Barry’s onslaught.

As the round progressed, Mwekassa began to make contact with frequency and Barry was forced to a knee.

The fight continued, but Mwekassa delivered a vicious left uppercut that put Barry out for good, with less than 30 seconds left in the first round, ensuring a massive upset in the process.

The result for Mwekassa and the Primrose-based Fearless Fighting ran contrary to the perceived outcome, which had the much feared Barry, renowned for his fierce kicking ability, coming in as the clear favourite.

After the fight, Mwekassa’s trainers, Shane Labuschagne and Jan Julicher, revealed that their strategy had been to rely on Mwekassa’s proven boxing skills.

“We knew Mwekassa had to box Barry and that, if we could do that, we would be on even terms,” said Labuschagne.
