Young golfer heads for World Championships

Germiston’s Liam van Deventer was among the world’s best young golfers, aged five to 18, who went to East Lothian, Scotland, for the prestigious US Kids Golf European Championship, on May 27-29.

Approximately 550 players from 35 nations competed in Europe’s premier junior golf tournament, to showcase the next generation of stars.

The championship is held on many of Scotland’s historic golf courses, in East Lothian, including Gullane, Craigielaw, Luffness New and Longniddry.

The local golfer finished in sixth place of a field of 66 boys, with scores of 75, 72 and 77.

The round of 72, which Liam shot on the second day, was the best round of the day in very difficult conditions, with wind and lots of rain.

His position earned him a place in the international team, which contested the Van Horn Cup the day after the European Championship.

This is the second time that Liam has qualified to play for the international team in the Van Horn Cup, which is contested following the conclusion of the European Championship.

This year’s Van Horn Cup was played on May 30, at the Luffness New Golf Club.

Top players from Western Europe face off against top international players in a team event.

In all, 10 games of stroke-play four-ball are played, and each game is worth one point.

Six players from last year’s victorious international team returned in 2014: Rina Tatematsu, Phoebe Beber-Frankel, Kaiyuree Moodley, Frantisek Jan Pavek, Joseph Pagdin, and Daniel List.

This group capitalised on its experience, as all six players were part of winning pairings, resulting in five of the team’s seven points.

The international team won the Van Horn Cup 7 – 3.

Liam has returned home, but keeps hard at training as he is scheduled to leave for America on July 18, to compete in the US Kids Golf World Championship.

It is for this reason that Liam and his family reach out to the community for any form of sponsorship.

The van Deventer family will appreciate any form of sponsorship that will enable Liam to compete in the World Championship.
