Impressive results from local rower

Rowers return from Belgium.

A squad of 50 developmental and elite young men and women were selected to represent the South African Schools Rowing Union (SASRU), at the Ghent International Regatta, in Belgium, on May 10 and 11.

Zachary Christophers, from Germiston, was among those selected to be part of the squad.

These students were selected from Gauteng and the Western Cape to form composite squads, due to their performance throughout the 2014 rowing season.

They competed in both the International Belgium Senior Rowing Championship on the Saturday (against open rowers), and in the International Flemish Junior Rowing Championships, on the Sunday.

Their competition included national teams from Wales, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands and UK Clubs Leander and Oxford Brookes.

All the participants achieved superb results, and SASRU was repeatedly spotlighted for multiple wins and places throughout the two-day regatta.

The u-16/17 Gauteng Sculler squad highlighted in this article were among the achievers.

Coached by James Buchanan and Dillon Mantle, the quad, consisting of Armin Wessels, Joshua Nixon, Zachary Christophers and Nicholas Mason, took silver on Sunday, smashing their previous personal best times over 2kms by more than 15 seconds.

Gabriel Smith was the most successful junior sculler from either province, achieving 11th place in a race of more than 50 competitors.
