Simmer head for the top

Great results for Simmer.

This weekend was an exceptional one for Germiston Simmer Rugby Club, as all three their teams posted convincing wins.

Simmer played Kagiso on Saturday, at the Germiston Stadium.

The u-20s managed to rise from their first round defeat against Harlequins to beat Kagiso with a 28-point margin.

The first try was scored within five minutes of the beginning of the game.

After the first score, the scene was set for forward domination, that saw good back line ball and plenty of opportunities.

Unfortunately, work remains to be done at the breakdowns, as a red card was issued after 20 minutes, due to repeated infringements.

At this stage the Simmer youngsters were 14-0 up, and Kagiso scored their only try just after this send-off.

Simmer then rallied and scored another try, before the half-time break.

Soon after half-time, the u-20 coach started ringing the changes and gave the whole bench a run.

Two more tries were scored in the second half of the game, and the Man of the Match awards went to Dalton Dasneves, for his absolute domination in the forwards, and Kobus Holtzhausen, who scored the most points on the day, with one try and five conversions.

At the end of the game the score was Simmer 35 – Kagiso 7.

The second team marched on from the tremendous victory against Harlequins and ensured that Kagiso’s seconds were kept scoreless.

The Simmer backline ran in nine tries, while Corrie van Rooyen added one forward try to the score sheet.

This game was one of dominance in attack and defence by the Simmer team.

Coach Hennie de Villiers ensured that good bench rotation took place, thereby strategically resting weary legs for the long season ahead.

The scoreboard at the end of the match read Simmer 66 -Kagiso 0.

The Man of the Match awards went to Louis Brits, for outstanding work in the tight and loose play, and to Dirk Koegelenberg for enterprising back line play.

After a much needed rest due to postponement of the Alexandra fixture, the previous weekend, first team coach Maree Bester reintroduced some players who were injured in the historic defeat of Harlequins, in the first round.

The game started slowly, then Simmer hit their straps and provided entertainment, the likes of which has not been seen for some time at the Germiston Stadium.

The platform was set by the forward pack, where Charles “Chucky” Moorcroft, in particular, kept the Kagiso defenders busy with his bulldozing runs.

The backline, in turn, provided evidence that there is no substitute for speed, and converted this forward dominance into points.

Eight tries were scored by the back line, and captain Charl “Gras” Wright weighed in with two forward tries.

Man of the Match awards went to Moorcroft and to Andrew “Drew” Gibbons.

The score: Simmer 62 – Kagiso 5.

The next game is an away fixture against Soweto, and Simmer aim to continue their challenge for the top log position.

The chairman, Rene Audier, is quietly optimistic that this could be the best season in decades for the club.
