Canoeists tackle the Championships

Paddlers head for the Homestead Dam.

The Gauteng Kayak Marathon Championships took place on May 10 and 11, at Homestead Dam, home of the Ekurhuleni Kayak Canoe Club, which provided the trials for selection of the Gauteng team for the South African Marathon Championships.

A number of participants from the Victoria Lake Canoe Club competed in both the K1 and K2 events.

Spoon Mkhuzangwe, from Germiston High School, finished as the third u-18 in the singles race.

The Saturday of the Gauteng Marathon saw the K1 paddlers pit their strength, fitness and endurance against each other in single canoes, which included the guppy paddlers, between six and 12 years of age, while the Sunday was devoted to the doubles championships (K2).

The SA Marathon Championships is a national, inter-provincial event, which takes place at the same venue on June 7 and 8.
