Gauteng Canoe Union’s practice sprint races

Junior paddlers prepare for tough competition.

While many Gauteng juniors are planning to enjoy a couple of weeks of holiday, the junior paddlers will be doing some serious training as they approach the South African Inter-School Sprint Competition.

The competition takes place in De Rust, on the Stompdrift dam, Eastern Cape, on the first weekend of May.

Among the junior paddlers in the training programme in Gauteng, who will be participating at the inter-provincial event, will be a number of young active canoeists from Germiston’s local schools who are also members of the Victoria Lake Canoe Club.

The Gauteng school league has arranged a number of practice sprint races, including 200m, 500m, 1000m and the long distance of 2000m and 5000m (age appropriate).

These practice races ran during the past months into April as preparation for the inter-provincial events where Gauteng canoe achievers can gain points towards receiving their Junior Gauteng colours.
