Masters athletes excel

Senior Germiston Callies athletes head for masters championships.

Rudi Jordaan and George Hunter, from Germiston Callies, competed in the Gauteng North Masters Athletics Championships, in Pretoria, on March 8.

Both athletes put on their best performances and produced impressive results.

Jordaan, in the men’s 30-34 years category, took first place in the 200m sprint, in an electronic time of 23.92 seconds; first place in the 100m sprint, in an electronic time of 11.80 seconds and first place in the long jump, 5.96m.

George Hunter, in the men’s 40-44 years category, took first place in the 100m sprint in an electronic time of 11.91 seconds, and second place in the 200m sprint, in an electronic time of 24.38 seconds.

Jordaan took a break from athletics in 2001, for personal reasons, and returned in the 2012/2013 season.

One of his goals for this year is to compete at the South African Athletics Championships at the end of April.

Jordaan encouraged young athletes to work hard.

“Do the best of your ability and follow your dreams, no matter what; always remember that the Japanese saying ‘wa-go-ken-san’ means ‘never give up’,” he said.

Jordaan and Hunter are training hard for the next masters championships, that will be held in Rustenburg, on Saturday, March 22.
