Get ready to race

National Classic Cycle Race back again.

Germiston cyclists should prepare their bicycles and build up their stamina, because the Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle Race is again taking place on February 23.

It is the 30th year that the race will be held, and it attracts a field of between 4 500 and 5 000 cyclists in various categories.

The main purpose of the race is to raise funds for charity, particularly in support of Rotary projects and the Rotary Foundation, and to further the development of amateur cycling in South Africa.

This is the last major race on the Gauteng calendar before the Cape Argus, and is very popular as an ideal final warm-up before the cyclists travel down to the Cape in a few weeks’ time.

This is also a seeding event for the 94.7 Cycle Challenge.

The race is jointly organised by the Germiston Rotary Club and the Germiston Wheelers Cycle Club.

It begins and ends at Carnival City, which has proved to be a great venue since 2001.

The children’s race provides a fun morning for the little ones, and takes place on a specially built track at Carnival City, under adult supervision.

Great prizes and a girl’s and a boy’s bike can be won in a lucky draw.

Online entries closed on February 11 (yesterday), but late entries can be made at the following venues:

  • Thursday, February 20: Cycle Lab, Centurion Gate Shopping Centre, Centurion from 9am to 5pm.
  • Friday, February 21: Cycle Lab, Nicol Grove, Fourways, from 9am to 5pm.
  • Saturday, February 22: Tour de Frans Cycle, Boksburg, from 8am to 2pm.

On race day entries will be accepted only for the 65km race and the children’s race.

The event comprises the following categories:

  • Men’s Elite (top clubs) – 160km.
  • Licensed veterans (30-49) -103km.
  • Licensed women, veterans and open -103km.
  • Licensed boys and girls and open – 65km.
  • Kiddies races – two ro eight years old.

Other attractions on the day are:

  • The Rotary Anns food tent.
  • Music and announcements by East Rand Stereo.
  • Lucky draw prizes galore and so much more.

Regular cyclists and new riders are welcome to come along and battle it out at the race.
