Local tournament success

Tebbutt Academy's successful tournament.

The Tebbutt Academy held their third annual Maxima Gauteng Tournament at the Springs Civic Centre, on October 4 and 5.

The mixed martial arts academy is situated in Lambton and clubs from all over South Africa participated in the tournament.

“I am very happy with the success of the tournament; everything went well and there was growth in the number of participants this year,” said the master of the academy, Alex Tebbutt.

Even with the strict panel of judges from different clubs, the members of the Tebbutt Academy racked up a total of 147 trophies and 36 medals.

“As a master, I am proud of all of the club members and I would, again, like to congratulate Hannah Wedel and Logan van Heerden, of Tebbutt Academy, because they each received a Champion of Champions trophy,” Tebbutt added.

“I would like to thank all the instructors, the table of officials, judges and everybody else who made the tournament the success it was.”

Tebbutt would also like to thank Emperors Palace for accommodating some of the participants who live far from where the tournament was held.

Tebbutt Academy has a number of competitions and a tough grading lined up, such as the Big Black Belt Grading Cuscue (camp), where members with brown belts will be graded to black belts and those with black belts will progress to first Dan.

This cuscue will run over three days, Friday to Sunday.

People interested in joining the academy are welcome to do so; age groups are from four years to seniors.

Practise times are as follows:

  •  Monday: 6pm-8pm.
  •  Tuesday: 6pm-8pm.
  •  Wednesday: 6pm-8pm.
  •  Thursday: 6pm-8pm.
  •  Saturday: 6pm-8pm.
