Covid-19: Ward councillor urges community to stand together and help one another

Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer urges residents to keep a healthy mind, keep to their daily routines and keep up with an exercise programme during lockdown.

Alta de Beer, Ward 39 councillor, writes:

With the President’s announcement of an extension to the lockdown period I am sure many residents, like me, were a bit disappointed.

I feel for all the businesses, big and small, that are losing money on a daily basis, which is resulting in workers not been paid and many even facing retrenchment.

I have received hundreds of calls from people in need of food and I am working very closely with various donors in an attempt to assist those who do not qualify for the food parcels from government.

We have already distributed over 300 food parcels and will continue to work hard to assist where possible.

This is a time for us to stand together. If you are in a position to assist please contact me on 082 777 1406.

For those who do qualify for the government sponsored food parcels I send all these names to the Department of Social Development.

I urge residents to use the remaining lockdown time to regroup because once we are back at work, there will be pressure to give the economy a kick-start.

This might mean we will have to go that extra mile in our work places.

I also urge the community to keep a healthy mind, keep to their daily routines and keep up with an exercise programme.

This is also a good time to learn a new skill.

There are lots of online courses available free of charge.

Make use of this time to enhance yourself.

Also don’t forget that working in the garden or starting a vegetable garden is food for the soul and will bring calmness.

Parents and children must please continue with the homework.

Stay home, be safe and keep sane.
