Mrs Vee’s cup of words – Lockdown thoughts

Raising children during lockdown.

It’s an interesting time to be alive and most importantly for me as a mother of two it’s an interesting time to be raising my children.

We are on day six of the lockdown and I’m really questioning how we are raising our children.

I see a number of parents (especially mothers) sounding terrified of spending time with their children.

That made me wonder and start looking closely at how our parents raised us in the olden days and how we raise our children now.

I feel our children are raised by schools and the internet.

We are always at work and when we are home we are still busy.

Parents seem to be scared to be with their children indoors for the next 21 days, fearing they will lose their minds.

Schools closed early for a reason – to protect them.

But children were seen at the malls and roaming the streets.

I’m not judging, I’m wondering why we don’t keep our children at home.

We are home currently and parents should enforce the law and keep their children home and not allow them to play in the streets and visit friends’ houses.

As parents, we should look at this as a blessing.

We should take this time to reconnect and bond with the children.

I’m not saying it’s easy, I have to find ways to balance things like working from home, paying attention to my babies and keeping the household running.

But that should not create a feeling of despair.

I’m adjusting to being home-bound all the time and trying to take every day as it comes, not to overthink and overplan.

Overworking the children with schoolwork and keeping them busy is not always the solution.

We see children having issues at schools and acting out, this should be the time parents use to bond and talk to their children and really listen to the challenges they have.

Open that door for conversation and do not judge, rather listen and look for ways to teach them coping skills.

It seems one thing we forget as frustrated parents is that children are also facing challenges.

They are missing school, friends and their daily activities that have been put on hold.

Everyone is being challenged, from the young to the old.

These past six days and the 15 days coming should be looked at as a journey of self rediscovery.

These coming days will be challenging on everyone, mentally and spiritually.

We are going to be forced by this lockdown to face our fears, demons and challenges.

I hope as a nation we can come out with renewed faith.

My wish for families and couples, even individuals, is to use this opportunity to really fall in love with themselves.

As we stay home and adhere to the new rules of life, we should learn to be grateful for life as others were not so lucky.

Let us remind ourselves that for every day we stay indoors, we ensure we can enjoy safer days in the future.
