Metro fails to pitch at planned park clean-up

The Dancu Residents Association was left disappointed after the metro failed to attend a planned clean-up project.

The Dancu Residents Association, which caters to residents from Dinwiddie, Albemarle (east of the N3 highway), Norton Small Farms (east of the N3 highway), Castleview and Union (east of the N3 highway), recently attempted to host a clean-up.

Charleen Kirby writes on behalf of Dancu:

We sent an email to the Ekurhuleni Parks Department requesting an urgent clean-up of Dinwiddie.

We requested a combined attempt to clean up the worst-looking park in the Dinwiddie area, which is found on the corner of Cheam Crescent and Kingston Road.

A reply was received, a date was set and a message was sent out to the community requesting assistance.

On the morning of the clean-up, everyone but the Ekurhuleni Parks Department arrived.

We waited until 9.40am only to see them cutting grass in Dewlish Avenue.

We asked when the clean-up would take place and were told that it would be done on the same day, but that the rubbish could not be removed as another truck needed to remove it.

As residents we feel this is unacceptable, and our area is looking shabbier by the day.

Not only does this state of affairs aid the rat infestation in the area, but it also decreases our property values.

We are constantly in fear of being bitten by rats or contracting diseases.

The park around the Dinwiddie Library is being used as a toilet by work-seekers, who persist in standing in the streets all day.

This is unhygienic and unhealthy for the work-seekers as well as the residents.

The metro collects ratepayers’ money for the upkeep of our parks, so why is this not done?

The excuse given continuously is that there is a delay in the maintenance programme.

We feel this is simply poor service delivery and demand the clean-up of all the parks in our area.

Why is the Dancu Residents Association area being neglected?

Other parks within the Ekurhuleni borders are very well looked after – why not ours?
