Hard work begins to pay off in fitness challenge

The GCN’s Leigh Hodgson and Melissa Hart are enjoying their fitness challenge at Unique Physique.

So the Unique Physique fitness challenge is going strong.

Leigh Hodgson (GCN senior journalist) and Melissa Hart (editor) have been hard at work, training and trying to eat correctly.

We had our first assessment after three weeks of work and we must say we were quite pleased with the results – they show that our days of stiffness and saying no to that bag of crisps and actually starting to pay off.

With regard to the first body assessment our results were as follows: Leigh lost 600g in weight, 38cm overall and her body fat was down by 11 per cent; Melissa lost 1.1kg in weight, 29cm overall and four per cent body fat.

We were reminded that it is important to look at the centimetres and body fat lost and not the weight on the scale, as muscles weigh more than fat.

Our personal trainers, Marius Wessels and Jean Bertillon, are pleased with our progress, but are ready to step up the training.

Marius said: “After a slow start the training is getting on track and their strength and confidence is growing.

“Most of the training sessions in the first few weeks were spent on exercise form and the correct execution and movement.

“We entered stage two after the first body assessment which saw us making small adjustments to the training, including but not limited to mores sets and reps, new exercises and increasing the intensity of the workouts.”

The most difficult part is still getting the nutritional side of things correct, which is hard given all the temptations of winter food and our specific dietary restrictions.

We are looking forward to the next stepped-up phase of training, which includes cardio.
