Diva’s Ink- June 16

Don’t forget the importance of June 16 and as you celebrate it, let your youthfulness come out.

It is the 40th year that we, as South Africans, are celebrating June 16.

It is a public holiday and while others are visiting museums and heritage sites, there will be those taking part in Youth Day events.

Let us not forget our brothers and sisters who will be having braais and parties.

With all these festivities that occur annually, it got me thinking as to whether the celebrations are a reflection of what the day means to each individual.

I find myself pondering what June 16 means to different people.

I took to Facebook to try and find out what the day means to others and how they will be spending the day:

  • Oleva Sam Velbroek said, “For me, personally it means living for a greater cause. As I look back, I can’t ignore the fact that some people chose to put their individual agendas, dreams and goals aside for the good of the ‘nation’. I am not sure where I will be on the day, but I am sure that I will remember to put my small dreams aside and look for ways to serve my community.”
  • Moitswadi Maponyane said, “A normal day just like always, not going to do much but I will be cooking for those celebrating.”
  • Although there is a common feeling behind June 16, and other public holidays, individuals have different views and ways to celebrate and commemorate the day.

It is just imperative for people not to lose and/or forget the significance of this day.

Have a great June 16!
