Young cyclists welcomed at OR Tambo after Cape Town feat

Some supporters expressed disappointment that the welcome event had not been better organised, saying they could not present their gifts to the riders.

Joy and jubilation filled OR Tambo International Airport on April 23 as a crowd of proud supporters gathered to welcome home the Gauta BMX team, whose cycling journey from Limpopo to Cape Town captured the hearts of South Africans.

The team Gauta Mahlakoane, Karabo Mokoo, and Maxwell Ndou embarked on a 1 700km expedition from Burgersfort to Cape Town, which began on April 1 and concluded on April 14.

It was more than a physical challenge; it was a mission to raise awareness and funding for their community bike club, which provides youth with a positive alternative to crime and drug abuse.

What began as a humble dream soon gained momentum after the three cyclists posted a heartfelt video on social media.

Their message caught the attention of international DJ and music producer Karabo Mokgara, known as DJ Karri, who helped rally sponsors and shine a national spotlight on their campaign.

In a moving interview at the airport, Simon Baloi, a family member of Karabo, expressed his gratitude: “As a family, we were scared when they started; we did not know what could happen on the road.

“We are relieved and thankful that God sent an angel like DJ Karri to guide and support them. We are thrilled with the boys’ milestone.”

Supporters, waving South African flags and chanting the team’s slogan, ‘We love the support’, packed the arrivals area, eager to celebrate the young cyclists.

However, excitement quickly turned to chaos as the crowd surged to take photos with the team, forcing them to leave sooner.

Some supporters expressed disappointment that the welcome event had not been better organised, saying they could not present their gifts to the riders.

Among the dignitaries who came to honour the team was Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Diketseng Mashego, alongside cyclists from Thembisa, who said the team’s journey and perseverance inspired them.

The expedition was not without its challenges.

Maxwell Ndou sustained an injury during the trip, but the team remained steadfast, drawing strength from one another and the outpouring of support they received across provinces.

With no initial accommodation or resources, the riders relied heavily on the goodwill of strangers and the help coordinated by DJ Karri.

“We were concerned about their safety, especially with no accommodation arranged when they started,” one supporter said.

“But now, seeing how far they came with the help and support of so many, we are overjoyed.”

Supporter Rama Teffo echoed the country’s pride.

“I came here to support and welcome the Gauta BMX team.

“We are proud of them and hope to see them continue travelling and spreading their message of hope, ‘We love support.’”

The team’s journey has taken social media by storm, with countless South Africans applauding their bravery, passion, and perseverance.

Their feat is a powerful reminder that no dream is too big when fuelled by purpose and determination.
