Germiston SPCA pleads for animal safety during Diwali celebrations

The Germiston Bedfordview SPCA emphasises that while fireworks are a traditional part of Diwali, it can be distressing for pets and animals.

As Diwali, the Festival of Lights, approaches on November 1 the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA reminds the community to prioritise animal safety and welfare.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a significant festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains worldwide.

The festival symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

Millions of people globally, including many locals, mark the occasion with various festivities, illuminating their homes with lights and enjoying spectacular fireworks displays.

The tradition includes lighting diyas (earthen lamps), fireworks displays, family gatherings, traditional attire and cultural events.

The SPCA has warned that fireworks can cause distress to animals and has issued the following advice to pet owners:

• Stay home to comfort your pets
• Minimise noise with TV, music or white noise
• Close windows and curtains
• Consult local vets for advice
• Consider calming medication.

“We wish all celebrants a joyous Diwali and urge responsible festivities, respecting animal welfare and community harmony.

“If you plan to use fireworks, kindly notify your neighbours in advance and ensure the care and safety of your pets.
