Police crackdown on crime in Germiston

The agreement allows all three spheres of government to work simultaneously in combatting crime in the city.

Police minister Senzo Mchunu, along with other law enforcement agencies, led a large-scale operation in Germiston CBD, Benoni and Alberton on October 9.

The multidisciplinary operation resulted in the arrest of 212 suspects.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major General Anna Sithole and Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza.

It follows a cooperation agreement signed on Tuesday in Tsakane, allowing national, provincial and local governments to work together to combat crime in the City of Ekurhuleni.

“This operation proves the agreement is not just ink on paper,” said Sithole.

The team targeted abandoned and hijacked buildings in Germiston, notorious for illegal electricity connections.

Among the suspects arrested were 212 illegal immigrants, three individuals found in possession of unlicensed firearms and three others involved in drug dealing.

The operation is part of a broader anti-crime initiative, including a recent Mayoral Blitz in Kempton Park, where officials made several arrests and closed down non-compliant businesses, including illegal liquor manufacturing operations.

Xhakaza emphasized that these operations will continue across Ekurhuleni to reclaim streets from criminals.

“As the festive season approaches, these crime-fighting efforts will grow stronger, ensuring our communities are safer,” said Mchunu.

Operations in Germiston concluded with the arrest of three illegal miners and the seizure of two firearms in Primrose, reinforcing the city’s commitment to tackling crime across Ekurhuleni.
