City urges Germiston residents to prioritise rates and taxes payments

Revenue generated from rates and taxes directly supports critical services such as waste removal, water and electricity supply, road maintenance and the upkeep of public spaces.

The City of Ekurhuleni has underscored the importance of rates and taxes in maintaining essential services in Germiston, urging residents and businesses to remain up-to-date with their payments.

These funds are crucial for sustaining local infrastructure, ensuring efficient service delivery and supporting vital community development initiatives.

“The smooth operation of essential services in Germiston relies heavily on the revenue collected through rates and taxes,” said CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“When residents delay or neglect payments, it hinders the city’s ability to effectively deliver these services.”

Non-payment has placed increasing financial pressure on the municipality, affecting its ability to carry out necessary improvements.

Projects designed to enhance the quality of life in Germiston, such as road repairs, upgrading water systems, and improving public safety, depend on these funds.

In addition to infrastructure development, rates and taxes also support broader social initiatives in the community, including housing, healthcare and education.

“Every payment made contributes to the overall development of Germiston,” Dlamini said.

The city encouraged residents to stay compliant by taking advantage of various payment options, including online platforms.

Those facing financial difficulties are urged to approach the municipality to discuss payment arrangements and avoid falling behind on their obligations.

Failure to pay rates and taxes can lead to consequences for Germiston residents.

Non-payment can result in interruptions to water, electricity and waste collection; delayed payments may incur additional charges, increasing the total debt owed and CoE can initiate legal proceedings to recover outstanding debts, potentially adding legal fees to residents’ financial burdens.

Prolonged non-payment can also lead to the disconnection of essential services such as water and electricity and in extreme cases, CoE can obtain a court order to attach or auction off a resident’s property to recover unpaid rates and taxes.
