City urges locals to use water wisely

Fix leaks in your irrigation system and adjust watering schedules based on seasonal needs.

As spring gets into full swing the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) urges residents to use water sparingly.

As the temperatures begin to rise, so will water use, and during that time it is crucial to preserve water.

“The CoE is committed to promoting water conservation and sustainability. We encourage residents to join us in this effort by adopting water-saving practices to avoid a day zero,” said the CoE’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

He provided water-saving tips to assist residents:

• Water your lawn and garden early in the morning or evening to minimise evaporation.

• Fix leaks in your irrigation system and adjust watering schedules based on seasonal needs.

• Sweep driveways, sidewalks, and steps rather than hosing them off.

• Plant drought-tolerant plants and trees that require less water.

• Use a spring-loaded shutoff nozzle on your garden hose to avoid water waste.

• Avoid washing cars with hosepipes by using use buckets.

• Turn off taps while brushing your teeth.

“By following these tips and making water conservation a priority, residents can save money on their water bill and reduce the strain on water treatment facilities,” Dlamini explains.

Dlamini encouraged residents to report water leaks through the city’s call centre at 0860 543 000 or email call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za
