Foundation offers winter relief parcels to locals

“I have visited Taiwan three times. I currently work for the organisation as a social services assistant.”

The Tzu Chi Foundation South Africa based in Bedfordview has once again extended its support to the residents of Primrose and Delport informal settlements by distributing food parcels.

The initiative, part of Tzu Chi’s winter assistance efforts, focused on 600 recipients from these communities, benefiting 2 000 locals since the start of June.

Residents received a variety of essential items, including Taiwan rice, salt, sugar beans, Mabela, shoes, and clothing.

Priority was given to elderly, disabled, and low-income households, as explained by Delport informal settlement community leader Kabelo Motang.

“We conducted door-to-door visits to identify members in need. We found 400 individuals from Delport requiring assistance,” said Motang.

Motang also highlighted the challenges faced by Delport, particularly the high crime rate, which has prompted the deployment of community patrols.

“Unemployment is rising, and most people struggle with poverty. Young graduates must enter the workforce immediately to support their families,” he added.

Emmanuel Mogale, a protégé of the foundation, inspired the crowd by teaching them the theme song We Are One Family.

Mogale, who began volunteering with Tzu Chi in Grade 11, was awarded a bursary by the organisation to continue his education after matric.

“I pursued a higher certificate in economics and managment science at Unisa. I’ve visited Taiwan three times, where I learned about the founding of the organisation. I now work as a social services assistant for Tzu Chi,” said Mogale.

The foundation has satellite stations in several areas, including Mayibuye, Ivory Park Ext 6, Winnie Mandela, Phomolong, Themba Khosa and Thembisa.
