Department of Human Settlement warns of housing scams

“The scammers falsely claim to be senior officials, such as directors, MECs, or heads of department, to sound more legitimate.”

The Department of Human Settlements urged the community to be vigilant against housing scams.

According to the Gauteng department, housing scams in the province are becoming more prevalent.

The department does not sell RDP houses or land and does not charge the public for its services.

“Please be aware of unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of unsuspecting members of the public by pretending to act on behalf of the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements.

“The scammers falsely claim to be senior officials, such as directors, MECs, or heads of department, to sound more legitimate,” said the head of communications for the department, Tahir Sema.

Sema said scammers offer community members the ‘opportunity’ to ‘jump’ the housing waiting list, buy RDP houses, or purchase land through one of the department’s programmes.

“If you encounter suspicious activity or receive such offers, report them immediately to the local authorities.

“Stay vigilant and protect yourself from these fraudulent schemes,” said Sema.
