Local choirs fiercely compete for a big prize

The competition was all about celebrating the talent Ekurhuleni has to offer.

The Golden Walk Shopping Centre in Germiston was transformed into a hub of musical excellence as it hosted the highly anticipated Battle of the Choirs Competition.

Choirs from across Ekurhuleni gathered to compete for R55 000 in prizes, showcasing community spirit, talent, and musical brilliance.

The competition celebrated Germiston’s rich musical talent, with choirs vying not just for victory but also for the opportunity to display their skills.

Imbewu Yethemba Mass Choir took second place.

Dulang Thapelo Dibini claimed the first prize of R30 000, while Imbewu Yethemba Mass Choir took second place with R15 000, and the Nostalgic Male Choir from Thembisa secured third place with R10 000.

The event kicked off with each choir performing original songs, followed by a second round where they presented their renditions of Ndikhokhele by Jub Jub.

The all-female judging panel, including musician and competition ambassador Wanda Baloyi, evaluated the performances.

The top six choirs performed in front of an enthusiastic audience, culminating in a final showdown among the top three.

Brilliant Mashabane: “I came from Windmill Park to enjoy the competition. I love choral performances and the choirs in the competition did not disappoint. It was lovely to see an all-female choir. One girl was playing the drums which is rare to see.”

Thabang Nxumalo, leader of the winning choir Dulang Thapelo Dibini, expressed the significance of their victory.

“Preparing for the competition was challenging, but this win means a lot to us. We plan to use the prize money to record six more songs for an album and produce music videos,” said Nxumalo.

He praised the competition for providing a platform to showcase their talent, citing positive feedback from both judges and the audience.

Wanda Baloyi lauded the event, highlighting the high level of preparation and creativity displayed by the choirs.

“The performances were phenomenal, reflecting the immense talent our country possesses. The enthusiasm and support from the community were truly heartwarming,” said Baloyi.

She congratulated the winners for their professionalism and dedication.

Imbewu Yethemba Mass Choir took second place.

Golden Walk Shopping Centre’s marketing manager Lutho Linyana expressed gratitude for the community’s support.

“This has been an incredible journey, celebrating the talent, dedication, and unity of our community.

“The enthusiasm and support from our customers have been inspiring. The six finalists were chosen by the community, reflecting their love for local talent,” said Linyana.

She thanked the community for their unwavering loyalty and participation, emphasising the richness and diversity of local talent.
