El-Shammah receives winter donations

The El-Shammah Home for abandoned babies in Primrose received donations from the Dunamis Christian School.

The Dunamis Christian School visited the El-Shammah Home for abandoned babies in Primrose to donate baby items through their Winter Warmer community outreach programme.

The donated items include baby food, clothes, nappies and toys.

During the 2023 winter programme, they donated winter essentials to homeless people, but this year, they focused on the needs of children’s homes.

Learners from the school, accompanied by Stefan van der Westhuizen, enjoyed time playing with the children and learning about the institution.

Van der Westhuizen said the school does community outreach programmes per agreed terms to offer help to needy people.

“We asked learners to donate what they could as per grade.

“Parents and learners were eager to contribute, knowing that is for a good course,” said Van der Westhuizen.

“Serving the community has become a second culture to us as the school. We are based on Christian values and teach our students that a little act of kindness can go a long way.

“Last year, we helped homeless people. In August, we will do an entrepreneurial day as a school and encompass that with a community clean-up,” he said.

The El-Shammah home has had its doors open for 15 years, and through it all, they still service the community by relying mostly on community support.

Speaking to Allistair Scholtz of the organisation, they welcomed the donation by Dunamis with open hands.
Scholtz said when the school called, they were excited to receive them, knowing they bring with them much-needed parcels.

“We shelter children abandoned by their parents. We desire to reverse that and create a haven for them.

“Unfortunately, we are licenced to raise babies until they are two years old,” said Scholtz.

Scholtz added that as Mandela Day looms, he invites the community to be in contact with their organisation for Mandela Day projects.
