City launches new digital method of payment for bus fares

Municipal bus drivers will no longer accept cash or new Wayfarer tickets, transitioning entirely to the digital system.

The CoE implemented a Quick Response (QR) code system as a new form of payment for municipal bus fares from June 1.

This move marks a significant step towards becoming a fully functional digital city.

Municipal bus drivers will no longer accept cash or new Wayfarer tickets, transitioning entirely to the digital system.

“Despite this development, a grace period – a month – will be afforded to commuters who had already loaded funds on their Wayfarer cards for June.

“Such commuters will have until the end of the month to use these,” explained metro spokesman Zweli Dlamini.

The introduction of the QR code system aims to improve the commuting experience by streamlining the ticketing process and enhancing commuter convenience.

The new system will speed up the boarding process and promote a safer, cashless environment, said Dlamini.

Commuters are encouraged to plan their travels accordingly to ensure all Wayfarer card funds are used before the metro completely phases out the system.

QR code tickets are available for purchase at all municipal bus depots.
