Germiston athlete prepares training after recovering from injury

This is my special medal because it was the first for the year.

Keyaam Jansen, a Germiston-based athlete, prepares to train after a long-standing arm injury.

Jansen fractured his arm earlier in the year while warming up for the school’s competitions.

He switched from rugby to athletics last year when in Grade Nine. The Grade 10 athlete had a promising start before pulling out of all competitions after the injury.

“I am in Hoërskool Marais Viljoen and have competed on behalf of my club and school in many events.

“When I first began training with coach Thulani Sibeko in September last year, I had no clue what to do,” said Jansen.

“Earlier this year, I qualified for the Gauteng Schools Championships, but the night before I was to compete, fractured my arm during warm-up when I was taking part in the school’s competition.

“I am getting ready to train and perform at a higher level; my goal is to place in the top three at upcoming competitions starting in October.

“I want to compete at the National Championships next year for both school and club.

“I improved my times; earlier this year, I ran 10.9 seconds instead of 12.8 in the 100m and the 200m, 22.8 seconds instead of 24. I want to win the African Championships and smash my personal best.

“I also want to go compete at the U18 and U20 World Championship. These events will serve as a training ground for the 2028 Olympic Games,” said Jansen.
