Watch: Suspects busted for illegal mining at Simmer and Jack Landfill Site

In addition to arresting several suspects, Mkwanazi said firearms, used by the suspects, were recovered at the scene.

Members of EMPD’s Tactical Unit arrested several suspects at the Simmer and Jack Landfill Site on charges related to illegal mining earlier today.

The illegal mining operation was held, on April 9, in partnership with other law enforcement stakeholders.

The tactical unit was patrolling the area which is a known hotspot for illegal mining activities.

EMPD’s General Julius Mkwanazi said while gathering information in the area the unit was shot at by the suspects and returned fire.

He said when officers returned fire they managed to detain and arrest some of the suspects.

In addition to arresting several suspects, Mkwanazi said firearms, used by the suspects, were recovered at the scene.

Medical services were called to the scene to attend to the wounded suspects.

Mkwanazi said the April 9 operation formed part of ongoing operations targeting illegal mining hotspots across Ekurhuleni.
