Bertha Gxowa Hospital raises awareness on TB

Prostate cancer screening which focuses on men at risk of prostate cancer. Early detection leads to a broader range of treatment options and a higher likelihood of successful intervention.

Bertha Gxowa Hospital hosted a World Tuberculosis (TB) Day at the Germiston Taki Rank on March 27.

World Tuberculosis Day is celebrated each year on March 24. Its an occasion to raise awareness and advocate for efforts to eliminate TB.

The hospital, in partnership with its partners, including Ekurhuleni Health District, Wits RHI, Aurum Research, Isibani Development Partners, Tintswalo Home Based Care, and Right to Care, provided a wide range of preventive and diagnostic services to address various health concerns.

These services included:

• TB and diabetes screening, which aim to identify potential cases of TB and diabetes at an early stage. Early detection enables prompt treatment, reducing complications and enhancing patient outcomes.

• Prostate cancer screening which focuses on men at risk of prostate cancer. Early detection leads to a broader range of treatment options and a higher likelihood of successful intervention.

• Circumcision services

• Blood pressure checks which is essential for maintaining cardiovascular health. This service aids in the early identification of potential hypertension (high blood pressure) and facilitates timely management.

Bonisiwe Hlongwane, the HIV and AIDS, STI and TB (HAST) manager at Bertha Gxowa Hospital, highlighted the significance of World TB Day, observed annually to raise public awareness about the TB epidemic and the ongoing efforts to eliminate the disease.

Hlongwane said, “Our hospital is dedicated to providing TB screening, conducting investigations for TB, initiating treatment for diagnosed TB patients, performing contact tracing, and offering TB prophylaxis to individuals in contact with TB.”
