Bertha Gxowa Hospital celebrates love in a unique way

This initiative reflects the Gauteng Department of Health's commitment to fighting surgical backlogs and ensuring better healthcare access for everyone.

Bertha Gxowa Hospital celebrated love by performing stoma reversal (colostomy closure) surgeries on seven patients.

These patients previously underwent ostomy procedures.

This initiative tackles the critical challenge of patient backlog, bringing hope and healing to countless individuals.

These stoma reversals are part of the ongoing surgical marathons campaign launched by Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko in July 2023 during Mandela Day.

This initiative reflects the Gauteng Department of Health’s commitment to fighting surgical backlogs and ensuring better healthcare access for everyone.

One patient who underwent a stoma reversal shared her experience, highlighting the challenges of living with a stoma.

Bertha Gxowa Hospital staff performed stoma reversal (colostomy closure) surgeries on February 7.

“She expressed the difficulties of explaining the condition to others, the social limitations imposed by the stoma’s odour, and the constant need for bathroom visits and monitoring.

“However, she emphasised how much the surgery changed her life, stating she now feels more normal, can comfortably eat and drink, and feels revitalised,” said Bertha Gxowa Hospital communications officer Mampe Marapyane.

The woman expressed deep gratitude for the life-changing procedure.

“The success of these stoma reversal surgeries not only signifies medical achievement but also embodies the spirit of compassion and commitment to improving the quality of life for patients.

“Bertha Gxowa Hospital’s dedication to innovative healthcare solutions and patient-centred care continues to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals within the community,” said Marapyane.

On February 14, the hospital staff also gave patients and colleagues roses and sweets to show their appreciation.
