Man caught with an unlicensed firearm by EMPD

“A firearm permit was sought and he failed to produce it. After a thorough inspection, it was discovered that the serial number of the firearm was filed off."

The EMPD’s Winnie Mandela precinct officers arrested a 38-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, along Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Winnie Mandela Section, Thembisa, on February 3.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said during the execution of their official duties, members of the EMPD stopped a white Golf VII driven by the suspect and requested to search the vehicle.

Thepa explained that when the suspect alighted his vehicle, a firearm was noticed and immediately removed from his possession.

“A firearm permit was sought and he failed to produce it. After a thorough inspection, it was discovered that the serial number of the firearm was filed off,” said Thepa.

“During preliminary investigations, officers found four rounds of live ammunition on the suspect.”

Thepa said that the suspect was handed over to the Tembisa North SAPS where he was charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He is expected to appear in court soon.

“The space for criminals in the city is closing down. This is the commitment of the EMPD to secure the city,” said Thepa.
