Dawnview High crowned by Germiston Athletics Schools Association

The school envisions bringing back basketball and adding netball for the boys as an extracurricular activity.

Dawnview High School was crowned the first-ever recipient of the Germiston Athletics Schools Association (GASA) shield plaque.

The GASA has changed its trophy system and introduced the shield plaque.

Dawnview High dominated the athletics fields at the Germiston stadium with 360.5 points overall.

Head of sports Solomuzi Mhlongo said they won the shield during the interschool competitions hosted by GASA.

“We are now selecting a team that will represent the Greater Germiston B at the district level.

The team comprises mostly of our athletes. We dominated mostly at the field events walking away with gold, silver and bronze medals.

“It’s important to promote the culture of sports at the school level. The development of the talents starts there. As a school, we have been able to produce talent that went to Denmark, and across Africa.

“Being coached by younger coaches like us inspires the students. While some students may struggle academically, others find that attending school gives them the opportunity to freely express themselves in sports.

“We intend to compete at the district level, so our journey continues to the provincial level and then the nationals.”

According to Deputy Head of sports Brenda Mhlanga, the school envisions bringing back basketball and adding netball for the boys as an extracurricular activity.

The school appealed to nearby companies to provide transportation and uniforms for its sports teams.

“We have soccer for both boys and girls, athletics, and e-sports, which we plan to participate in once more this year. We even made it as far as competing overseas last year,” said Mhlanga.

“We’ll be starting up our chess competitions again soon.”
