District commissioner addresses Elandsfontein residents on crime

Sithole urged residents to help the Crime Intelligence Unit to bring those at fault to justice.

As part of Operation Shanela held on January 25, Major General Anna Sithole held a community Imbizo in Elandsfontein and eMabondeni informal settlement.

This follows after concerns were raised by residents on January 17 during the community engagement meeting with the Bedfordview SAPS.

The district commissioner was joined by the CPF representatives, the Department of Health and other stakeholders to address some of the crime-related challenges raised by community members.

Previously, residents expressed their frustrations with crime to the Bedfordview SAPS.

Concerns regarding alleged corruption within the police force, the pumping of diesel from trucks, cable theft as well as domestic violence were raised.

Sithole urged residents to help the Crime Intelligence Unit bring those at fault to justice.

“We have our crime intelligence to deal with corrupt officials. Just because you are a police official that doesn’t mean that you are immune to the law.

Community raise concerns.

“Should they be found guilty they will be dealt with internally and criminal charges can be brought against them,” said Sithole.

In response to the theft of diesel, she said they are working towards arresting those involved. Two suspects have already been arrested.

She said patrols in the area are ongoing and that motorists should ensure their vehicles are locked at all times, especially in parking lots.

During the Imbizo, the commissioner encouraged residents to open cases with the intent of seeing them through.

Sithole also praised the members for their impact since no serious crime was reported at the local police station during the operation.

Bedfordview station commander Colonel Sinothi Ndaba said they are ready to tackle the theft of diesel with the establishment of a business forum.

Law enforcement stakeholders address the community of Elandsfontein.

“Our major problem is the truck owners. When we arrest the drivers for selling the diesel illegally the owners of the trucks are not prepared to give statements.

“We continue to hold discussions with the business owners to find a permanent solution,” he said.
