Local athlete excels at annual Dis-Chem Half Marathon

Held at Bedfordview Virgin Active Club, runners made their way through the hills of Bedfordview, Morninghill and Primrose.

Onalenna Khonkhobe dominated the 22nd annual Dis-Chem Half Marathon on Sunday.

The Nedbank Running Club runner finished the 21km race in a time of 1:05:49 followed closely by Namakoe Nkhasi, a Nedbank Running Club athlete from Lesotho in a time of 1:06:55.

Securing the third place was Jobo Khatoane from Maxed Elite Lesotho in a time of 1:07:40.

The half-marathon and fun run presented by Momentum Multiply was hosted in partnership with Bedfordview Country Club Athletics.

In the 21km women’s results, Hollywood Athletic Club’s Irvette Van Zyl won in a time of 1:16:13, followed by teammate Cian Oldknow (1:17:52). Emma Pallant-Browne from Britain and Peak Athletics Club came third in a time of 1:19:35.

Held at Bedfordview Virgin Active Club, runners made their way through the hills of Bedfordview, Morninghill and Primrose.

In the men’s 5km run, Christo Pieterse was the first one to cross the finish line in a time of 19:28. In second place was William Ntsheni (19:37) followed by Daylen van Vuuren (19:58).

Lungiswa Tshikila crossed the finish line for women in a time of 26:32. Second was Carolyn Finniss (26:59) and Sigourney Griffin-Ellis (28:16).

Runners take to the streets of Bedfordview and Primrose.

The funds raised during the event will go to the Lambano Sanctuary for orphaned children with HIV and the Namaqua Dog and Donkey Foundation, which undertakes the sterilisation, vaccination and treatment of animals in informal settlements on the East Rand.
