City worker dies on duty after hit by a taxi

City of Ekurhulen waste collector Moses Phiri Madiba who died in the line of duty is described by his family as a hard worker and loving father.

A City of Ekurhuleni waste collector, Moses Phiri Madiba, has died after being hit by a minibus taxi while on duty in Bedfordview.

The incident occurred on the morning of January 9 at Concord East Road.

The father of five who celebrated his 46 birthday on January 4 leaves behind his wife, children, family and friends.

Madiba, a Germiston resident, had been working for the City’s Environment and Waste Management Services Department for 17 years and six months.

His uncle Johannes Madiba described him as a fun and loving person.

“He was a hard worker, a dedicated husband and a loving father. He will be missed dearly by everyone,” shared Johannes.

City’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said Madiba was performing waste collection duties when he became a victim of the road accident.

“This is a very sad incident and the city’s sincere condolences go to his family and loved ones.

“We further appeal to motorists to be extra careful and be on the lookout for essential service workers as they continue to render this critical service.”

The city has organised psychosocial services for the colleagues of the deceased.

Madiba was laid to rest on January 14 in his home town in Limpopo.

Bedfordview police’s Sergeant Lillian Modiga confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

“The EMPD officer on duty received a call from the control room about an accident at Concorde and Martinique.

On arrival at the scene, she found the victim deceased,” explained Modiga.

No suspects have been arrested yet.
