Planned EFF event at Gillooly’s Farm raises concerns

EFF's youth voter registration bash at Gillooly's Farm receives backlash from Clr Humphreys.

Jill Humphreys has raised concerns against the planned Youth Voter Registration Bash by the EFF on December 9 at Gillooly’s Farm.

The Ward 20 councillor’s concerns include the event taking place without proper compliance and potential violation of the by-laws.

They expect about 6 000 people on the day, with the event starting at 10:00.

There will be live performances by various artists.

Humphreys said the park cannot accommodate the expected number as it has become smaller due to upgrades.

She also highlighted there was limited parking space, the toilet facilities were currently not functioning and the contract for the parkrun on Saturday.

“I am totally in favour of the youth having the opportunity to register to vote.

“Gillooly’s Farm over the years has unfortunately deteriorated greatly as a result of failed attempts to lease it,” she stated.

She said the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) does not have the funding to do what has to be done.

“The park lies in the centre of a quiet residential area. The way this function is being presented is the intention is to have loud music and a youth ‘bash’.

“Whether alcohol is involved, I don’t know, but that is one of my main concerns.

“As a parks by-law, alcohol is not allowed,” explained Humphreys.

The only response she has received thus far has been from the Environmental Health Department, who confirmed that reports of sound measurements have to take place.

Meanwhile, EFF Gauteng spokesperson Dumisani Baleni rubbished the concerns, saying the event is compliant with the CoE by-laws.

“This is a student and youth activation. We are not promoting alcohol, but encouraging young people to be active citizens by registering to vote.

“Which should be the responsibility of everyone,” said Baleni.

He emphasised the party has organised transport to mitigate traffic.

“We know what we are doing! The EFF likes order and since we are dealing with young people, safety and security is at the top of our list,” he added.

He encouraged other political parties to mobilise the youth to register to vote.
