The CoE’s divisional head of libraries, Karen Muller, was handpicked nationally by the Library and Information Association of SA as one of the most committed and excelling talents in national libraries.

“It was a process, and I had to do a formal presentation and a panel interview. The announcement was at the annual conference gala dinner.

“This award is an acknowledgement of a long career, spanning over 40 years in the profession,” said Muller.

“Throughout my career, I always strived to do the best for the libraries and ensure we serve the communities and make a difference.”

She said the award is a reminder of why her job is crucial.

“Librarians make a difference. We can change lives, and to be recognised is a humbling experience.

“I am grateful for what my profession allowed me to do. I will use this prize money to give back to the profession and develop other young librarians,” said Muller.

Winning the award made her reflect on her career.

“I have grown and developed in the profession.”

Muller said her thirst for knowledge inspired her to join the profession.

GCN asked her if traditional libraries still have a place in the digital age.

“Libraries play an important role, even as traditional libraries. Recent research regarding the reading levels of Grade Four learners shows traditional libraries have an important role now more than ever.

“We need to get the children to read. Our programmes in Ekurhuleni libraries include Born to Read, Raise a Reader, Blast off with Books, homework assistance and Gogos Go Digital,” said Muller.

Muller said librarians should have inquisitive minds, a thirst for knowledge and a service-orientated mindset.

“You must also be in touch with your community and well organised,” said Muller.

She urged parents to encourage their children to read.

“Reading is one of the best gifts any parent can give their children. Let them discover the magic of libraries and reading at a very young age,” said Muller.
