Councillors stand in solidarity with Germiston residents on power crisis

The energy issue has become a matter of life and death to residents.

DA councillors Wendy Morgan, Kade Guerreiro and Jean Ingram together with the MP Michéle Clarke are in solidarity with the residents of Germiston over the energy crisis.

They were present outside the civic centre on Friday when residents took to the streets to show their dissatisfaction with the electricity crisis in Germiston.

“We are in support of the residents as they hand over a memorandum of grievances on the energy crisis.

“We also demand an improvement in service delivery when it comes to energy supply,” said Ward 36 Clr Morgan.

Councillors said the power issues also affect other areas of service delivery.

“Power has taken priority over other issues in our area because it affects residents’ daily lives. In Ward 92 we had no power for 55 days, which requires us, as councillors, to constantly try to seek information and keep residents updated and further try to assist where we can,” said Ward 39 Clr Guerreiro.

He said revenue has been lost.

“People have lost money and the elderly have to spend more money – money they don’t have because they need to make plans as many use oxygen.

“That is why we are spending so much time trying to solve the power issue because it has a dire effect on residents,” said Guerreiro.

Clarke said they have taken this matter to the Human Rights Council to investigate.

“The Constitution says you have the right to power and council is bound to supply electricity to residents.

A petition will be taken to parliament where the CoE will be called to account in front of the committee of energy and Cogta about the delivery to residents.

Enough is enough. Germiston residents have endured enough,” said Clarke.
