Ekurhuleni Mayor engages Germiston residents on service delivery

The Masisebeneni programme allows the mayor and his executive to see for ourselves as the executive how are people living and navigating daily lives in the community.

The mayoral outreach programme, Masisebenzeni, was carried out in Germiston on Friday.

This programme is hosted every second Friday of the month when the mayor is accompanied by officials from various departments.

Executive Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana and members of the mayoral committee visited different wards in Germiston to carry out service delivery inspections and to use the opportunity to engage with residents and hear their frustrations.

The mayor visited wards 35, 39 and 93.

In Ward 39 the team stopped at Germiston Lake which has experienced a number of vandalism incidents and lacks maintenance.

The water and sanitation team unblocked a drain in Dukathole that has been blocked for weeks causing health hazards as sewage has been running down the street.

The lighting around the lake is not working, public toilets are closed and fencing repairs are needed.

The next stop was Dinwiddie Library and hall where there is a lack of parking.

Another area that was visited was Ringwood Street which is riddled with potholes.

Repairs were done on the day but officials told the mayor that temporary solutions are not the best solution.

He was told that potholes resurface quickly after rains and due to heavy traffic.

The last stop of the day was Dukathole where there are services delivery issues.

The water and sanitation department was on site to unblock the drain.

The mayor also had the opportunity to speak with the community members and issues about the lack of power were raised.

Ward Councilor Ntuthuzelo Mpambani said the area needs prepaid meters.

“By normalising the area we can ensure that every household has electricity,” said Mpambani.

“The programme offers residents the opportunity to talk directly to the departments and we also get to see firsthand what challenges the community are faced with and that gives us a clear understanding of these areas,” Ngodwana told GCN.

He further said the electricity remains the top priority.

“We are aware of the electricity challenges in Germiston and we are exploring different ways to ensure out residents have power,” said Ngodwana.
