In response to reports about sewage woes in Cruywagen Park, the City of Ekurhleni said vandalism caused these problems.

Germiston City News reported on July 14 that Brits Streets residents Samantha van Vuuren and Virginia Vilakazi were tired of the sewer overflowing onto their properties whenever criminals stole the pump at the sewage pump station.

They questioned why the gate at the pump station was not locked because it increased the chances of theft of the pump and if the city was working on a permanent solution to prevent theft.

“The challenge was vandalism, which resulted in the pump station failing, but we did replacement work, and the pump station is now functional,” said CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

On the reason for the pump station not being secured, he said the city planned to ensure adequate security.

“Keep in mind that we conduct maintenance there when it overflows, and the trucks require access when needed,” said Dlamini.
