In response to complaints from motorists who frequently drive on Stanley Road that recycling activities are causing traffic obstruction, the CoE commented that recyclers are reminded that there are terms and conditions for one to recycle.

Motorists who frequently drive on Stanley Road in Primrose have complained about recycling activity on the side of the road.

GCN previously reported that road users are concerned about recyclers burning rubbish, causing smoke, which is an additional distraction to drivers.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said that EMPD is aware of the Stanley Road problem and metro officers have been monitoring the road. Plans are in place to address the matter.

“We will invite the waste management department for their expertise, and we will continue to monitor the area,” said Thepa.

More recently, CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said that recyclers are required to comply with the national norms and standards for waste management or acquire a waste management licence.

“They must also register for accreditation in terms of the integrated waste management by-laws and operate at a property correctly zoned,” said city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“The city must enforce all environmental and spatial planning legislation to ensure that corrective measures are implemented. Recycling cannot be undertaken in a residential area.

“Recycling activities must be undertaken in areas zoned to allow recycling,” said Dlamini.
