Uncollected waste at local old age centre cause health concerns

“The smell from the bins was unbearable.”

A resident of Cora Erasmus Old Age Home, Sibongile Makoloke, voiced concerns about how the facility’s trash is collected.

She claimed nearly a month had passed since the last trash pick-up, and as a result, her health had suffered.

Although there was a trash collection on March 29, Makoloke claimed that wasn’t the first time the city had neglected to collect it.

According to Makoloke, when she enquired why there was no collection, she was told the route was too narrow for the trucks and that a van would be sent to pick up the bins.

“This is an excuse because the waste is picked up everywhere besides on our property.

“December’s waste was not entirely collected.

Instead, it was collected on January 20 and February 7 and 20. Likewise on March 29.

“The smell from the bins was unbearable. We had to close the windows for days.”

She said her lung condition worsened because of this.

“Flies were a problem. What we want to know is why and despite the repeated requests, the municipality failed to collect the trash,” said Makoloke.

The GCN sent a media enquiry to CoE requesting comment by March 31 at 10:00. No comment was received by the time of going to print.
