Three arrested for business robbery in Elspark

The arrests resulted in a campaign to sensitise the public to thefts and robberies.

An Elspark campaign to sensitise residents and security guards to motor vehicle theft and business robberies was conducted two days after the arrest of robbery suspects on May 2.

The campaign, held at Kingfisher Square, was conducted by members of the Elsburg SAPS Vispol Support, Ekupholeni Brigade and patrollers.

This followed the May 2 arrest at 19:45 when six men entered a shop in the Elspark shopping centre and took an undisclosed sum of money.

“They were observed by the security guards who were on patrol. After the men fled the area on foot, the security pursued them.

“A shootout followed between the suspects and security officers. Three men were captured, and one suffered injuries to his lower body.

He was transported to the hospital for treatment,” said Elsburg SAPS communications officer Sergeant Daphney Phooko.

The other three escaped arrest.

Phooko said the police found two firearms and ammunition on those arrested.

They face charges of business robbery, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and possession of stolen property.

The campaign made residents and security guards aware of the theft of motor vehicles and business robberies.

“The guards were urged to be vigilant, report strange activities and movements around the centre and be aware of their surroundings.

“The SAPS distributed pamphlets on safety tips to avoid theft of vehicles, theft out of motor vehicles, business robbery, gender-based violence and substance abuse,” said Phooko.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects’ accomplices may contact the Elsburg SAPS on 071 675 6894 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
