Ekurhuleni serial rapist case postponed to September

The case against Nkosinathi Phakathi, dubbed the Ekurhuleni serial rapist, was again postponed.

Phakathi appeared in a Pretoria High Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on March 27, where a clinical psychologist was to present a report. However, it was learnt that the report wasn’t finalised.

The report will form part of the evidence presented in court for sentencing.

During his appearance, the court gave a final remand from September 26 to 29 for the presentation of the report and sentencing purposes.

At his previous court appearance on December 8, Phakathi’s lawyer, advocate Lekau Kgokane, told the court that the report was incomplete because of a series of challenges.

He said the defence had secured the services of a psychologist, and the report would be made available on March 1.

Phakathi pleaded guilty to 148 crimes relating to rape, kidnapping, theft and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was found guilty on 90 charges of rape, compelled rape (four), causing a child to witness a sexual act (three), kidnapping (43), theft (four), sexual assault (two) and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (two).

The 36-year-old committed these crimes against women and children aged between 10 and 44.

When approaching his victims, he either pretended to install meter boxes or geysers, said he was a house inspector or a food distributor or was looking for directions.

Phakathi would rob and rape his victims and threaten to kill them if they reported the matter to the police.

He was arrested in March last year in Barcelona, Etwatwa, after police searched for him for years following a series of rape cases reported in various areas between 2012 and 2021.
